VIN Verifications and Special Inspections
UMV provides VIN verifications, reconstructed vehicle inspections, and impound purchase inspections at all locations. These inspections are required in certain situations to ensure that a vehicle’s identification and history are properly documented.
When Is a Vehicle Inspection Required?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) verification or inspection may be necessary in the following situations:
- Assigning a VIN to a vehicle or home-built trailer that does not already have one
- Registering a reconstructed vehicle after major repairs or modifications
- Purchasing a vehicle from an impound lien, mechanic’s lien, or storage lien
- Importing a vehicle from another country and registering it in Alaska
- Buying a vehicle through a U.S. government auction that requires VIN verification
If you are unsure whether your vehicle requires an inspection, visit any UMV location, and our team will assist you in determining the necessary steps.
