Class D Road Exams – Available Only in Fairbanks
UMV offers Class D Road Exams exclusively at our Fairbanks location. Tests are administered on a first-come, first-served basis every Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Before arriving, carefully review the requirements to ensure you have the necessary documents and a road-ready vehicle. Missing any required items or arriving in a vehicle that does not meet state testing standards will result in the exam being canceled.
What You Need to Bring
To take the road exam, you must bring the following:
- Alaska instruction permit or valid knowledge test scores (issued within the last year). If you have lost your permit, two forms of identification are required.
- Proof of legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and residence address if you have not been issued an Alaska instruction permit or state ID. Refer to the Real ID section for acceptable documents.
- Corrective lenses (if applicable). A vision exam is required before testing.
- Proof of insurance showing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and description of the vehicle being used for the test.
- Rental car agreement listing you as an authorized driver if using a rental vehicle.
- Current vehicle registration. If using a vehicle with a temporary permit, provide the Application for Title and Registration.
Additional Requirements for Drivers Under 18
For drivers under 18, a parent or legal guardian must either be present at the test or provide a notarized Parental/Guardian Consent (Form 433). The parent or guardian must also provide a valid driver’s license, while legal guardians must submit certified court documents.
State law requires that underage drivers must have held a valid instruction permit for at least six months and must not have received any traffic citations in the last six months before taking the road test.
Vehicle Requirements for Testing
Each applicant must provide a vehicle that meets state safety and operational requirements. The car must have functional seat belts for both the driver and examiner and be in proper working order before the exam. If the vehicle fails inspection, the test will be canceled.
Examinees should inspect their vehicle before arriving to ensure that all required components are in working condition. This includes properly functioning lights, windshield wipers, defrosters, brakes, mirrors, and the horn. The windshield must be free of cracks in the driver’s field of vision, and tires should be properly inflated with sufficient tread. Vehicles must have both front and rear license plates, a working speedometer, and enough fuel for a 30-minute test.
Certain modifications may disqualify a vehicle from use during the exam. Studded snow tires are only permitted where and when legally allowed. Additionally, mirrored or aftermarket window tinting that exceeds legal limits is prohibited under Alaska law (13 AAC 04.223) and Municipality of Anchorage regulations (AMC 09.36.045).
What to Expect During the Road Exam
The road exam evaluates a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely under real-world conditions. The test includes parallel parking, backing maneuvers, quick stops, lane changes, left and right turns, freeway entry and exit, three-point turns, speed control, and stop sign and traffic signal compliance. Additional assessment points include intersection observance, proper following distance, and use of mirrors and vehicle controls.
Exams are immediately stopped if the driver violates traffic laws, commits an unsafe act, fails to perform a required maneuver, or is involved in a crash.
General Testing Guidelines
To ensure a smooth testing process, certain restrictions apply. Backup cameras and parking assist systems may be used but cannot replace safe driving habits. The examiner must see proper mirror use and head positioning throughout the exam.
Passengers and animals are not allowed in the vehicle during testing, and all cell phones must be turned off. To maintain a professional environment, test-takers are asked to refrain from wearing strong perfumes or colognes.
Exam Fees and Final Checklist (H2)
The fee for a Class D Road Exam is $120 per exam. Fees are non-refundable and must be paid before testing.
To avoid disqualification, drivers should confirm they have:
- A current Alaska instruction permit, knowledge test scores, or other required identification
- Proof of insurance and current vehicle registration for the test vehicle
- Parental consent (if under 18), with Form 433 or a parent/guardian present
- A road-ready vehicle that meets the listed safety requirements
