STANDARD ALASKA DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
If you need a Standard Alaska driver’s license, UMV offers the General Knowledge Exam at all locations. Below is an overview of the requirements for Alaska residents, new Alaska drivers, and new residents transferring from another state.
UMV Locations Offering Knowledge Testing
UMV offers the Alaska General Knowledge Exam at all locations before 5PM, including:
- Anchorage
- Wasilla
- Fairbanks
- North Pole
You can take the General Knowledge Exam at any UMV office without an appointment.
Alaska Resident
To be issued a Standard Alaska driver's license you must first pass the following:
- General Knowledge Exam; if you have never held a Learners Permit (offered at all UMV locations). Please arrive prior to 5PM.
- In-Person Road Skills Test
New to Alaska?
To be issued a Standard Alaska driver’s license, you must first pass the General Knowledge Exam. If you are becoming an Alaska resident, you must transfer your out-of-state license within 90 days.
- General Knowledge Exam (offered at all UMV locations). Please arrive prior to 5PM.
