Get Your CDL at UMV

UMV offers CDL permits, licenses, and knowledge tests. Since all CDL licenses are Real IDs, you must meet Real ID requirements when applying.

To be issued a CDL Permit or License, bring the following when you visit UMV:

For certain endorsements, you may also need:

  • Medical Certificate (if applicable)
  • TWIC Card or Background Check (for school bus and hazmat endorsements)
  • Fingerprinting (for a school bus endorsement)

CDL Knowledge Tests

UMV locations offer State of Alaska CDL Knowledge Tests. The specific test depends on your license class (A, B, or C) and any endorsements such as tanker, hazmat, or bus. No appointment is necessary—just arrive before 4:30 PM to take the test.

ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) Requirements

As of February 2022, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires all new CDL applicants nationwide to complete an ELDT theory course before receiving a CDL. This course and test are available at ELDTPro.com, where you can select the CDL class or endorsement that applies to your needs.

When you visit UMV, bring proof of ELDT completion to move forward with your CDL process.

Commercial Road Skills Test

A Road Skills Test is required to demonstrate your ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle. This test is conducted at Northern Industrial Training (NIT) and the Alaska DMV.

After passing, you will receive a certificate of completion—bring this document with you when visiting UMV.

Real ID Identity Documentation

Since Alaska CDL licenses and permits are Real IDs, you must bring all required Real ID documents. Refer to the Real ID section of this website for a full list of necessary documentation.

No appointment is needed — visit your nearest UMV location, and we’ll help you complete the process.
