OUT-OF-STATE INSTRUCTION PERMITS

NEW STATE RULES EFFECTIVE JUNE 2020

Beginning in June, 2020 the State of Alaska requires anyone conducting a road exam for an Alaska driver's license to first acquire an Alaska learner's permit and have six months of driving experience.

An out of state learners permit is acceptable only for the purposes of establishing the required time of driving experience.  The State of Alaska will not allow a driver to transition from an out of state instruction permit directly to an Alaska driver's license.

This policy change was implemented to ensure all Alaska-licensed drivers understand the Alaska-specific information and rules which are tested as part of the Alaska General Knowledge written test and administered to person's applying for an Alaska Instruction Permit.
